Part of working together in the unique way JONAH does means recognizing each of the vital ways that individuals contribute to a larger effort. While our distinctive method of relational collaboration sometimes blurs the boundaries between what work is JONAH’s efforts, what work is collaborative, or what happens by the community, we started the Justice Ally Award as a way to recognize that ownership doesn’t matter as much as an overall community effort toward social justice. This award validates that we can accomplish more together, and lifts up individuals in the community who are going above and beyond to connect people and move justice efforts forward. The task forces nominate people with whom they have partnered who amplify the efforts they are trying to do in the community, then the JONAH Executive Committee chooses one to be the recipient.
JONAH’s 2024 Justice Ally Award was given to Ginny Close! Ginny Close is a vibrant and dedicated former Peace Corps volunteer who, in her retirement years, continues to bring the same energy and passion to her work with newcomers from Afghanistan and other countries as she did in her early years of Peace Corps. Ginny was the instrumental force in the formation of Welcoming New Neighbors to bring people together who want to support refugees and immigrants. Ginny possesses a deep understanding of her mission: to foster a sense of welcome, acceptance, and belonging while strengthening the community. She envisions welcoming newcomers as adding more beautiful pieces to a tapestry—literally and figuratively—creating a richer, more inclusive quilt of exquisite, shared experiences that makes the whole quilt even more beautiful.
Ginny’s attention to detail is remarkable. She remembers who has their paperwork in order, which landlords have been contacted, and who might be interested in working on specific projects or providing housing. This incredible breadth of knowledge and care has led some of her new neighbors to affectionately call her “Mom,” while others seek her out at the “Ginny Close office” at The Coffee Grounds, where her wisdom and warmth are available.
Her heart’s desire is to change the narrative of fear to welcome, where we might live in a world of peace and justice for all.
