Don’t miss this opportunity to make a difference at the state level while connecting with fellow activists from JONAH and our coalition partners! Join us on the bus to Madison, where we will take action on important issues. We’ll share treats on the way and gather with other WISDOM affiliates at the Madison Masonic Center for presentations on common concerns. Lunch is included in the cost of the trip.
After lunch, we will rally outside the Center and march to the Capitol steps with signs and chants. There, we will hear speeches before entering the Capitol in groups, based on the legislators we have chosen to visit. These visits have been prearranged, allowing time to meet with about three legislators or their staff. Afterward, we will regroup at the bus at the designated time and place and stop for dinner on the way home.
As a founding member of JONAH, I have participated in this trip during several budget years and always found it fun, impactful, and even exciting. One of my most meaningful experiences was when my granddaughter joined me and testified to legislators about losing my son, her father, to mental illness. She advocated for increased funding for mental health services and Treatment, Alternatives, and Diversion (TAD) programs for those struggling with mental illness and addiction. Every budget year, I continue to bring this issue forward.
From my experience, the most effective conversations with legislators combine facts and statistics with personal stories, appealing to both the head and the heart. I hope you will join us to make your voice heard!
