Common Grounds is JONAH’s weekly community coffee chat where people from across the Chippewa Valley gather for respectful, nonpartisan conversation. Hosted by the Voices United Task Force, these Tuesday morning discussions create space to listen, learn, ask thoughtful questions, and build understanding across different experiences and perspectives.
Below is a reflection by Jessica Barrera, former JONAH Intern.
“Throughout my internship at JONAH, I had the opportunity to participate in the Common Ground Tuesday morning conversations. These conversations taught me that meaningful dialogue starts with listening, not trying to convince someone to see things your way. At a time when public conversations can feel increasingly divided, these non-partisan gatherings provide a space for people with different experiences and perspectives to share openly, ask questions, and work toward understanding one another.
Whether facilitating or attending, I have found value in the shared commitment to respectful conversation. As a facilitator, the role is less about providing answers and more about creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed, heard, and encouraged to contribute. It requires curiosity, patience, and a willingness to ensure that every voice has an opportunity to be part of the discussion.
As a participant, I appreciate the opportunity to hear viewpoints that may differ from my own. These conversations reinforce that common ground is not about agreeing on everything; it is about recognizing our shared humanity and our collective interest in building stronger communities. Even when disagreements remain, respectful dialogue can deepen understanding and reduce assumptions.
The Tuesday morning conversations have also demonstrated that nonpartisan engagement is an important civic practice. By focusing on listening, learning, and asking questions instead of debating or convincing, participants can build trust and strengthen relationships across differences.
I leave these conversations with appreciation for the power of civil discourse. Also, I leave with a feeling of hope. Facilitating or attending the group is a reminder that democracy is strengthened not only through voting, but also through our willingness to engage with one another respectfully, thoughtfully, and with an open mind.”
